Workaholism: The modern epidemic

By Sanjeev Krishnan

Today, the modern man is under pressure from various sources. Let it be the job, social commitments, family, and status maintenance etc.

Today, the modern man is under pressure from various sources. Let it be the job, social commitments, family, and status maintenance etc.  I feel the real problem lies in ignorance on how to manage day to day life, whether in the office, house, or in our way of dealing with society.

If we take work for example, work pressure should exist, otherwise where is the challenge in life?  But we need to be a good player by learning the techniques to marvel in the job. A job is not something that we let consume our life, leaving behind all other things in life. Let me clarify this point.

Today all of us work hard to improve our businesses, or get promotions or salary hikes etc. Imagine a person who is working for you day and night all the time at your beck and call and does everything that you want without uttering a word. This person is with you all the time, attending to all your needs and fancies as well.

You hardly think about his well being. This person is your body. You want a hike in salary, but what about your body?   How much hike you do give in relation to the body's well being or maintenance? You, as the mind, always make the body do everything to please yourself. The mind is the Managing Director entrusted to take care of the body.   But the Managing Director or the Mind is always occupied with only self- vested interests to please itself.  For this reason, all other departmental heads or the operational staff suffers continuously as a result.  Consequently, these staff either strike or falter in their efficiency because of the irresponsible Managing Director. The Chairman and the Board of Directors realize this is occurring however the Managing Director is a manipulator who says he cares but continuously abuses his power to act in his self-interest and do what he pleases . This is exactly what is happening to a workaholic or a smokaholic or an alchoholic etc . They think that by smoking or drinking or working all the time they will be happy but it all backfires because ultimately the body suffers irreparable damage and it becomes too late to repair the loss.

Do you feel workaholism is a new age epidemic that is spreading itself all over the place .

Today the demand is great in all avenues of sustenance of life. For some it may be to make ends meet, to some it may be for the extra show of extravagance, to some it may be to accumulate more and more wealth due to future life demand which can manifest itself at a later date. Whatever the reason, it is precisely this pressure which makes everyone  get stuck.  In their ignorance, workaholics subject themselves to the danger of  working endless hours and neglecting their health. All the effort spent in making money is useless if one loses one's health.  At this point, you cannot regain health with money.

2. What are the signs that a person is becoming a workaholic, and what makes someone a workaholic - his passion towards work or imbalance in life.

The signs that a person is becoming a workaholic include negligence towards oneself. The aim of every human being in this world is to gain all the peace and happiness possible. When we start the journey of life, this is our dominant goal but as we progress, the mind gets stuck in the work process and our true objective is lost.  In order to relieve themselves from their personal problems, some people work all the time, and this also makes then habitually conditioned to work as well. Hence imbalances and mismanagement of ones self leads people away from their true objectives and thrusts them into the wrong path of phases in life therefore deteriorating their health at all levels.

3. How to get back the balance.

Balance can be achieved when Yoga, the science of management principles, can be inculcated into one's life regime.  Yoga leads one from all darkness into the infinite light of knowledge.

4.How to manage time at work and work well under pressure.

Pressure of any sort can be taken as a burden or as a challenge.  If taken as a burden every moment brings in stress and strain. If taken as a challenge every moment is an achievement and a success.

5.Managing time is managing the moment.  Most of the time our mind is not in what we do.  It has its' own limited path and that takes away our time during any activity.  Awareness and alertness and persistent effort are the keys to time management.

I would love to say workaholism is not a modern epidemic. It is the way the person perceives it that makes it an epidemic or an opportunity to succeed in life.

Food is a necessity, however, too much of it in the wrong proportion is a disease.

Work is also an opportunity, however, mismanaging it is an epidemic that can destroy the one's very life and all the happiness and peace in ones' life.

Imagine a car full of money.   As you are driving, the sound from the engine, the wheels, and chassis start increasing with time.  How will we be then?  It will not be a safe drive, nor a comfortable or a peaceful one.   All along the car journey, we will be disturbed, anxious, and frustrated and the journey will end in a messy crash and catastrophe.  The car will be ruined.   This is exactly what we are doing with our lives. We have money and we have everything but we do not find the time to maintain and repair our vehicle, which is necessary to carry us on our journey.  Thus, we always travel the road in a battered car, treading the path worried and in fret and fury, losing our happiness and peace in life along the way.

Take time to maintain your vehicle and you will enjoy your drive in life.  It will then be a memorable and a happy journey one for yourself and your dear ones.
